Addiction to video games
STEP 1: Topic: Addiction to video games: Why is it that some video games can cause serious addiction-related problems for some players? When is this most likely to become a problem? What can be done to avoid such addiction and what can be done to treat it? What ethical responsibility, if any, do you think that video game developers have to address this, and why?
STEP 2: READ TWO REQUIRED READINGS:
1-My Life as a Night Elf Priest (Chapter 1 and 6) ? ?Nardi, B. A. 2010. My life as a night elf priest. Ann Arbor, MI: The University of Michigan Press.?
2-Powering Up (Chapter 1 and 4) ? ?Mileham, R. 2008. Powering up: Are computer games changing our lives? Mississauga, ON: John Wiley & Sons Ltd.?
STEP 3: FIND TWO ADDITIONAL SCHOLARLY WORKS
-Next, find two more academic writings (books, book chapters, journal articles, conference papers or academic essays) that you feel are particularly appropriate for the topic. At least one of these must not focus on video games, but must discuss philosophical and ethical issues associated with the topic in general. For example, an academic work on how philosophical approach might help us understand addiction to video games would be appropriate for this topic or an academic work on ethics on the tendency to reward violence in video games would be appropriate for this topic. The second reference that you find may or may not deal with video games directly, but it must also be associated with the topic.
STEP 4: WRITE AN ESSAY
-Write an essay addressing the issues raised for the topic (Addition to video games) and the required readings. Provide as objective and balanced an analysis as possible, and be sure to include both your own perspectives and those raised in your readings. Discuss the justification for your personal positions, and also highlight any weaknesses that they may have. Be sure to include examples of specific games that are relevant to your discussion. You must also briefly summarize the portions of your four readings that are relevant to your topic, and contrast them with one another.
-The essay will be marked in terms of both style and content the overall tone should be relatively formal. Contractions are not permitted, but you may use the first person if you wish. Be sure to use correct spelling and grammar. Your work must be clearly and logically organized. The first paragraph must provide an overview of the paper and clearly outline its central arguments and topics. The title of your essay should also give a clear indication of your topic. Creative and attention-grabbing titles are welcome. You must also include a bibliography and use in-text citations where appropriate. Your in-text citations and Works Cited section must be consistently formatted using the MLA style. Any information that is directly quoted, statistical, related to a specific study, someone?s opinion, controversial or not well-known must be properly referenced with in-text citations. Direct quotations must appear within quotation marks and must be cited, and should generally be avoided when possible (properly cited paraphrasing is preferable). It is important to be concise and avoid repetition.
STEP 5: WRITE AN EVALUATION OF THE TWO MANDATORY READINGS
-Write a short (about 100 words) commentary on whether you feel that the two references from the Required Readings and the other two Additional Scholarly Readings that you read were helpful for your topic. Feel free to be as critical or as positive in your reaction as you wish, but you must explain your position either way.
