Sentence Variation

The student can add a variety of sentences to add the rhythm and the life in the essay as well as add emphasis and reduce repetition. Too many sentences with similar lengths and structures make the essay monotonous for the readers. Are you interested in the current political events? Are you interested in medicine or health? Write down the key concepts or the words of interests after answering these questions.
  • Study the background information – Read an encyclopedia or a research article addressing the general ideas of the topic while noting the key concepts and ideas related to the research topics. The key concepts of the research articles can be obtained by reading the abstract or the summary of the article.
  • Focus on the selected topic – A too narrow or broad topic may be difficult to research. A broad topic can be narrowed by limiting the topic in terms of geographical area, culture, time frame, population group or discipline. A too narrow topic can be made broad by considering the interrelationships with other topics.

  • Highlight the useful keywords – Note the words used to describe the topic. By reading the research article keep track of the general information and the background, and then find the narrower terms, key concepts and synonyms to widen the research capabilities.
  • Develop flexibility – Modify the quality of the topic while doing the research. While doing the research much information may be found prompting the topic to be narrowed or little information prompting the focus of the topic to be broadened.
  • Provide the definition to the topic as a concise research question – Begin with a term or the word, and then create a more critical interest in an aspect connected to that word.
  • Read thoroughly and research more about the topic selected – Use the developed keywords to gather more information from the catalog, internet search engines, and research article databases to help in answering the question. Do more reading and some research before deciding on the final topic.
  • Formulate the thesis statement in the first paragraph of the essay – Thesis statement provides the answer to the research question and the purpose or objectives of the research.

When doing research to write an essay, the following steps are necessary:

  • Brainstorming strategy – It refers to what you know about the research question and the questions you want to be answered by the sources.
  • Reading skills – Read purposefully selecting the main concepts from the sources or research articles.
  • Highlight and make notes on the main concepts selected. Keep these concepts in a continuous prose.
  • Create an outline plan and develop a draft using the writing outline created.
  • Correct the possible errors or omissions made when developing the essay.
  • Cite the sources used in the essay.
  • Publish the final essay.
