Purpose of This Study
The purpose of this study is to explore how Black female social workers in the American rural South perceive their clients’ racial identities and how such perceptions impacttheir social work practices. I will use the tenets of Patricia Hill Collins’s(2002) Black feminist theory to explore how Black female social workers experience race in social work practicesettings. I will investigate whether these social workers practice the theory of cultural competence and/or color blindness in their daily practices with clients. Myresearch will focus on one primary question:how do the theories of cultural competence and color blindness filter through the lens of Black female social workers in a social work practicesetting?
Methodology and Research Design

I adopted a qualitative exploratory case study design in this study. Qualitative data helps researchers understand existing patterns, motives, and trends within a comprehensive study. This design is an approach to assist the study of a phenomenon in which the researcher derivesdata from other sources, which enables an issue to be studied through multiple means (Marshall and Rossman, 2014; Merriam, 2015). In this study, I will utilize case study as my primary form of data collection,including interviews, coding, memos, and evaluations of data (Yin, 2014). In this study, I will utilize case study relating to the topic of study as the research design. The primary data will be collected using interviews after which it will be coded and evaluated. (Yin, 2014). The methodology section of this study contains descriptions of various aspects of my research design, data collection and analysis, trustworthiness and validity, and implications of significance.
In this study, I will selecteight participants based on the purpose of the research and the characteristics of the research population. The focus of the research is on Black female licensed social workers who work in the rural south.

Sampling is used to obtain responses from selected members to make a generalization (Marshall &Rossman, 2014). In this case study design, I will interview eight Black female social workers from the rural south of Alabama. Merriam (1998) states that there is no magical number when choosing sample size; the goal should be to obtain an ample amount of data that will provide the researcher with a saturation of information. I will utilize social work conferences and social work networks to identify the participants for this research. I will target the following agencies for sampling and interview two social workers from each: (a) Department of Human Resources, (b) Tuscaloosa City Schools, TuscaloosaCounty Schools or Community Service Programs- Head Start, (c) Veterans Administration, and (d) adjunct faculty that are currently employed in a social service agency. These agencies have been chosen because they have variousclient demographics that will help the interviewee draw diverse responses from similar questions. They are intended to provide a diversified evidence to the research questions.
I will employ two types of data: primary and secondary (Yin, 2014). Primary data will come from interviews. Secondary data will come from scholarly journal articles and books.

I will use theinterviews to gather data from the population to answer the primary research questions. The questions for the interview will be open-ended and structured. Such questions will encourage the collection of full and meaningful answers from the participants. Open-ended questions will permit the collection of unlimited responses and details from the participant. The interview questions will allow space for creativity and self-expression in the responses.
Interviews will be face-to-face so I can ask detailed questions and probe for rich data. I will have opportunitiesto explore unknown areas relating to the topic of study, which can help in identifying gaps in the information for future research (Brinkmann&Kvale, 2005). Interviewsare expected to yield a higher response than using questionnaires for this particular type of case study design (Yin, 2014). Face-to-face interaction will aid in observation ofnonverbal data exhibited by the participants.
Administration of the interviews will start after I receiveInstitutional Review Board (IRB) approval from the University of Alabama. After participants have agreed tointerviews,I will ask that they complete demographic data sheets (see appendix). I will conduct four interviews per month beginning in June2017 and conduct the remaining interviews the following month. Follow-up interviewsfor the purpose of clarification of responseswill occur after the interviews have been transcribed and coded. I will assure the participants of anonymity and confidentiality before obtaining informed consents prior to beginning the interviews. Iwill record each interview using anaudiorecorder application on an iPad. This process will aid myinterpretation and clarification of the responses during transcription and coding of data.

I will take field notes to keep track of the information collected during the interviews. I will also transcribe the recorded interviews. I will maintain eye contact with the participant to avoid distractions. Some of the field notes collected will include the dates, locations, types of setting, and times of interviews. I will also capture details that pertain to spaces, places, and locations.
The data will be coded in categories to facilitate analysis. Coding will assist in transforming the data into categoriesthat canbe easily understood. I will use line-by-line coding in a careful manner to prevent the occurrence of errors and increase the reliability of the data. I will apply one code for each category, which will be comprehensive based on the data from the interviews.
