Discussion Homer?s Odyssey and at least one of Sophocles? Theban Plays (Oedipus Rex or Antigone)
DescriptionYour discussion should include a reading of Homer?s Odyssey and at least one of Sophocles? Theban Plays (Oedipus Rex or Antigone). As you develop your argument, remember to include a thoughtful and subtle analysis of each text through judiciously chosen citations. The works that we have read thus far have dealt with the destinies of individuals who refuse to recognize the limits imposed on them. Think of Odysseus fighting to return home despite the grudge of Poseidon, of Antigone defying Creon?s edict, or of Oedipus solving the riddle of his own life. How do the works of Homer and Sophocles treat the themes of defiance and individual will? What do they tell us about human actions in relation to fate, destiny, and cultural/social predetermination?
