Compare and contrast the concept of segmented assimilation (Portes & Zhou, 1993) with the classic understanding of assimilation. What are the main differences between both of these approaches? (15 pts.) Is the segmented assimilation theory a useful model to explain the current process of immigration to the United States? Support your answer (10 pts.)
1) Explain the two dimensions of the concept of ?bio-power? developed by Foucault. Why is this concept relevant for the development of a capitalist society? (15 pts) From a feminist perspective, what type of research has been developed using this concept of bio-power? Provide a hypothetical research question that could fit with a feminist reading of bio-power (10 pts.)
2) Using an intersectionality perspective, analyze the issue of access to family leave and affordable childcare. Your answer needs to address the main argument of intersectionality, as presented by Andersen & Collins (2016) (15 pts), and how intersectionality can illuminate the interaction of gender, race and class dynamics in this particular case (10 pts.).
3) Select two of the sociological perspectives on gender and sexuality discussed in class (e.g. social constructionism, intersectionality, masculinities, post-structural feminism, feminist theories of the body, and queer theory). Explain the main argument of each perspective (15 pts), and apply them to explain a current social issue, making sure to address the advantages and weaknesses of each theory (10 pts.).
