Immigrants/Non English speakers

Immigrants/Non English speakers

Draft Outline

Introduction of the group we are discussing
Example of representation system (e.g. OPAC) barrier, ways in which the barrier(s) has been addressed, and how effective they are. If these barriers have yet to be addressed make some suggestions based on the research or your own ideas.
This would focus on online users – focus can on how the search is set up, available points of access, serendipitous discovery in an online environment if a newsstand-like search option is available.
Could also discuss OverDrive or similar programs/apps for ebooks/audiobooks
User-assigned tags (per #12 part1 lecture)/folksonomies/social tagging
Example of classification system (DDC) barrier, ways in which the barrier(s) has been addressed, and how effective they are. If these barriers have yet to be addressed make some suggestions based on the research or your own ideas.
. DDC – focus can be on immigrant/ESOL migrant who use public libraries physically (omit online use, since that will discussed in the OPAC section)
a. How DDC works (discuss first?), then barriers, then solutions

b. This section could also mention the LCSH debacle about “illegal aliens” — see http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2016/06/legislation/library-of-congress-drops-illegal-alien-subject-heading-provokes-backlash-legislation/#_

Example of classification system/subject taxonomies (LoC/LCSH) barrier, ways in which the barrier(s) has been addressed, and how effective they are. If these barriers have yet to be addressed make some suggestions based on the research or your own ideas.
. LoC/LCSH, the focus can be on academic/university ESOL/international students
a. There may be some overlap in barriers similar to DDC, so I think it would be important to focus on the group being students and how their barriers would be different than child/adult users in the public library setting.

Example of classification system (MeSH) barrier, ways in which the barrier(s) has been addressed, and how effective they are. If these barriers have yet to be addressed make some suggestions based on the research or your own ideas.
