Informative Speech Assignment – 100 points (Speech = 60 points, Outline = 40 points)Speaking Dates: Wednesday 3/1, Monday 3/6, Wednesday 3/8
Assignment Overview:
For the second major speaking assignment in this class, you willuse an informative speech structure to present on a complex topic related to your major (or the area of study you THINK you want to be your major). You will use a visual aid to complement your speech. You may structure the speech as an informative overview of a subject, or you may explain how something works. You should inform your TA of your speech topic by Friday, February 17.
To further explain – if you are, for example, a psychology major, you might choose to explain the concept of object permanence to your classmates. Or, if you are a marine biology major, you might choose to explain the process of shark tagging. Alternatively, if you are a history major, you might detail the events of the United States’ Civil War. Lastly, if you are a computer science major, you might explain how cloud storage systems work. Whatever topic you choose should be fairly complex, so that you can distill it down to a simple 3-5 minute speech that will be understandable by your classmates who come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds. You also need to choose a topic that will be suitable for finding at least 3 credible sources of informationthat you will cite in your outline, on a reference page at the end of your outline, and aloud during your speech.
This assignment emphasizes research, use of examples to support ideas, and delivery using a simple visual aid. It is important that you organize your thoughts into clear and concise main points.You must have an introduction, body, and conclusion (as well as transitions). For the visual aid, you will be asked to show ONE visual on the screen that complements your presentation. This visual aid must be a chart, graph, or diagram that reflects information you present in your speech. You will need to practice your speech with your visual aid to ensure you maintain good delivery throughout. You should cite the source for your visual aid, unless you create it yourself. If you use more than a single visual for this presentation, you will earn a 0 for the visual aid grade component. The visual aid does NOT count toward your 3 sources.
As with all speeches, you are also required to construct a brief preparation outline. This outline will include a word-for-word intro and conclusion, as well as transitions, and separate, single-sentence entries for your main and supporting points. You will also need to cite your 3 required sources using APA format within the text of your outline (parenthetical citations) and on an APA reference page that will be attached to your outline. You will turn this outline in electronically to Blackboard the nightbefore class starts on your speaking day.
Lastly, you will be responsible for constructing and distributing an audience analysis survey via Blackboardto your classmates byMonday, February 20. Respond to classmates’ survey by Thursday, February 23. You will use the results from this survey to help you as you prepare your speech. You should also cite your survey results in your speech in order to earn full credit for relating to the audience. The survey does NOT count toward your 3 sources.

Specific Requirements:
?Provide an informative overview of a complex topic related to your major.
?Time limit: 3 – 5 minutes. If your speech fails to meet the time criteria, you will be penalized 3 points (even if you are over or under by ONE second).
?Develop a central idea statement that meets the criteria discussed in class (i.e., full sentence, one distinct idea, etc.)
?Organize your thoughts into 2-5 separate, concise, and balanced main points according to an appropriate pattern of organization; use a variety of examples and cite at least 3 credible sources to support main points.
?Develop a creative introduction and conclusion.
?Demonstrate skillful use of transitions.
?Use an extemporaneous speaking style. This means that you are not to read your speech or to memorize your speech, but are to talk to the audience from notes. You must be concerned with both physical and vocal delivery. You will be required to turn in your note cards (maximum of 2, one-sided ONLY), so make sure that you deliver the presentation from key words and phrases. Your instructor will be using the note cards in assessing delivery.
?A typed, full sentence outline of your presentation is due in Blackboard the night before class on your speaking day. If you do not turn in an outline to Blackboard before class, you will not be able to deliver your speech.
?Speech conferences will be held on Monday, February 27. You will be responsible for submitting an outline draft to your TA via Blackboard by Friday, February 24.

COMM 1315 Informative Speech Outline Rubric

A “C” outline fits the general purpose of the assignment, meets the minimum standards for the assignment and ALL of the following:
• Includes specific purpose
• Includes a central idea statement
• Is written in complete, typedsentences
• Has a consistent pattern of indentation and symbolization
• Includes transitions between intro, body, conclusion and all main points
• Contains all elements of an introduction (attention getter, central idea, relevance, credibility)
• Contains a body with 2-5 distinct main points and adequate supporting material for each
• Contains all elements of a conclusion (central idea and main points restatement, clincher)
• The outline has few writing/grammatical errors; a minimal number of APA errors
• Most of the outline is in your own words (i.e. limit your use of quotations)
• Includes a reference page containing at least 3 credible sources
• Demonstrates minimal level of effort and preparation
A “B” Outline meets all the criteria for a “C” outline and:
• Includes a central idea which is expressed as a statement, has one distinct idea, and contains the preview of the main points
• Main points are clearly organized in an appropriate pattern of organization
• Each entry in the body of the outline is limited to one sentence
• Each entry in the outline is written as a complete, declarative sentence
• Outline is typed in black ink using Times New Roman, 12 pt. font and 1” margins (single-spaced)
• Outline includes in-text citations for at least 3 credible sources
• Demonstrates above-average level of effort and preparation

An “A” Outline meets all the criteria for a “C” and “B” outline and:
• Transitions between main points are directional
• Demonstrates balance of main points (each main point contains the same amount of supporting material)
• Main points achieve the purpose of the presentation (i.e. the correct main points were chosen based on the assignment guidelines)
• Outline demonstrates creativity and thoughtfulness (e.g., creative AG, etc.)
• In-text citations and reference page are in exact APA format
• Demonstrates superior level of effort and preparation

A “D” outline does not meet the minimum standards for a C. If an outline fails to meet two of the criteria for a C speech, but still is sufficient to meet the most basic requirements of the assignment, it receives a “D.”

An “F” outline fails to meet three or more of the criteria for a “C” speech.

An outline that demonstrates student clearly did not follow assignment requirements or did not provide sufficient amount of information to evaluate will receive a “0.”

Minimum Standards for outline assignments include being typed, submitted via Blackboard before class on speech day, and including content relevant to specific assignment.
