Example (CANNOT BE USED): Divorce among Christians
Introduction (100-150 words)
? Student states that they are examining divorce rates among Christians.
? Clearly present your argument.
Historical Context/Contemporary Overview (300-400 words)
? In this section, the student found some divorce statistics online. They discuss the rise in the divorce rates over the last 4 decades. They also compare non-Christian divorce rates to Christian divorce-rates.
Cherish Character (200-300 words)
? The student discusses the creation of humankind as man and woman in the first chapters of Genesis. She discusses the marriage covenant in light of God as a covenant maker. The student also addresses the problem of human sin nature. In this context, she discusses some of the major problems facing contemporary marriages due to sin and the brokenness of the world.
Challenge Culture (200-300 words)
? The student provides an overview of the Scriptures teaching on divorce. She utilizes several good books on the subject, which she cites throughout. Based on an article, the student also notes that teaching against divorce has dropped in churches since the 1980?s. She relates this to contemporary consumer culture.
Serve the World (200-300)
? The student offers several responses to the problem*:
o The student proposes that churches need to recognize the centrality of the marriage covenant to families, churches and society at large. For this reason, she suggests churches need to provide more resources and attention to marriage. In her own church she:
? Sits down with a pastor to speak about her concern for marriages.
? Helps create a clearer way to seek marriage counseling through the church at the front information desk and on the church?s website.
? Decides to gather a group of people to offer free daycare one night every month at the church to provide couples an opportunity for a date-night.
? Joins a local chapter of a national organization that promotes healthy marriages.

o The student, who is married, notes the important of keeping her own marriage strong based on biblical principles and, therefore, sets a specific time and place to pray with her husband.

Conclusion (100-150 words)
? In a concluding paragraph, the student discusses how her solution would lead to human flourishing, as defined by a Christian.

*There are many directions Serve the World can take. As you will learn in Week 7, there are both radical and ordinary ways to serve the world. The goal for the Serve the World section is to propose solutions based on your analysis in the Cherish Character and Challenge Culture sections.
