RT 303 Mystics Saints and Radicals DUE F riday, September 23rd
For the first short paper, please write on the following prompt:

0 Using materials from the first four weeks ofthe course, write a paper in which you discuss, using
the sources from the course so far, a critical understanding of the dynamic between inner and
outer (esoteric/exoteric) religious experience and reality in the Jewish and Christian sources we
have considered. In other words, using the distinction clarified by Luke Timothy Johnson?s essay
?Dry Bones?, analyze how that distinction operates in at least one of the other readings from clas:
(e.g., Heschel, Bruggemann, in various biblical texts, in the experience of martyrdom).

The purpose of this essay is to take you into the texts discussed in class to try to identify some ofthe
important dimensions and consequences of what it means human in these spiritual and/or religious
contexts and questions. Therefore, it is important that your answers to the prompt you write on be rooted
in the actual texts under discussion. There isn?t only one response to questions posed here, so there is
lots of room in this paper for exploration in what the texts say. What I will look for is the support you
give for the answer you develop to this question you address.
The paper should 3-4 pages (1000 words), double spaced, with good grammar, spelling and punctuation
as well as proper citation of sources. When citing passages from the Bible, you do not need to give
publishing or translation information. You only give the name of the book, chapter and verse (so, John
2: 12-15, for example).
