SITUATION: Failure to Timely Obtain Permits
You’re Al Markel, president of Red Star Films, the Hollywood
studio behind the blockbusters New York v. L.A. and 21 Guns.
Red Star contracted with (hired) Permits Express (PE) to obtain
permits needed for the filming of Up & Out, a set-in-Hong-Kong
action thriller. PE applied for the permits, but errors by PE
resulted in the application’s being rejected, and the rejection
wasn’t discovered till the morning filming was to commence.
PE submitted a new application the same day, a Wednesday, and
the permits were issued the following Monday, and no filming
could be/was done in the interim.
Possibly, the permits would’ve been issued on Friday had there
not been a national holiday that day.
Amy Choi is PE’s managing partner.
