PICO question

In patients with indwelling urinary catheters, does the emphasis on nursing interventions regarding the need for early removal decrease the risk of CAUTI (catheter associated urinary tract infection)?

P- Patients with indwelling urinary catheters

I-Nursing interventions regarding the need for early removal of indwelling urinary catheters

C- Nursing interventions not implemented for indwelling urinary catheters

O- Decrease the risk of CAUTI (catheter associated urinary tract infection)

T- no time frame

In order to decrease the risk of CAUTI in patients, there should be protocols in place for indwelling urinary catheters.  According to (Bernard et al., 2012) urinary catheters are used without clear indications. It isvital for nurses to assess the need for indwelling urinary catheters. This in result increases the risk of CAUTI and can also be costly for the facility.
