Unlike physics or chemistry, which derived from ?seeing,? math is the science, stemming from ?imagining.? Having the only substantial foundation, counting, math could have become such amazing science. It became possible due to the imagination and logic of our honorable precursors. I believe I would choose math as my major, because I am astonished by the pulchritude of the combination of logic and imagination.
Funny thing is that my zeal toward math was triggered by learning of physics. One year ago, I was not satisfied with the knowledge confined in my textbook, so I decided to read the collegiate materials on physics. Just having taken a glance at the content, I was frustrated by the fact I had not had any background on calculus. As a result, 2 days later I came home with a book of Mathematical Analysis. It was so convoluted that I found myself stifled in the quagmire of the verbose and rigorous language of reasoning and solution. Nevertheless, after some months of delving, I found the way, adjusted into an objective track, built by logic.
I began getting my sight back to view the spectacle scene of kingdom of math. The definition and demonstration allowed me to create any architecture, simply using my imagination. I am quite convinced that literature and math are essentially the same things, both based on certain language and created by imagination. I would like to become a ?writer,? who composes the fanciest works by his chimera on the language of math. More specifically, I would like to study the pure logic, the cement cohering the brick of definition to compose the mansion of mathematics. Such exact determination was inspired by the ? Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy ? by Bertrand Russell. In the book he illustrated that there are two ways of developing math: advancing forward and tracing back. The latter one is all about the refinement of the theorems and definition, trying to show the somehow philosophical essence of pure logic behind it. I was thrilled for the affection as peeping into the core of the world while studying it.
When the day of the returning to my home country, the various selection of profitable career opportunity lying in front would dizzy my eyes: I may also have a prosperous life if I become an actuary or an engineer. However, I will also lack of the leisure to plunge into the ocean of math. So my plan is to become a math professor ( or maybe start as an EA ), practicing in university. Therefore, I will be able to have enough time to conduct my study, because digging into math is what professors do while preparing for classes. They need to have their own understanding of a certain field they are teaching so that to truly instruct and lead their students in the right direction.
Furthermore, the world of math is not constructed by one person. It is the on-going building program, designed by our ancestors and further developed by the forthcoming generations. Teaching young generations is the only way to promote the work of our precursors. I must say this is an honor for me to participate in the process of completing the mathematical science.
